William Doyle Galleries
One of the grandest of auction houses, with thumbnails of just about anything soon to come up for sale, this is a great way to learn about art and design. Also, why buy reproductions from the Museum Store or The Pottery Barn when you can buy real antiques here for less money?

UBid Auctions
Consumer goods being auctioned not by previous buyers by wholesalers and manufacturers. Kinda gimmicky, kinda tacky, but still worth a look-see, especially for stuff that's recently discontinued or out of season.

The Marine Web
Comprehensive links and info on boat stuff. Of course the only boat I've spent lot's of time on is the Staten Island Ferry, so what do I know?

Pretty Things
Geezer.com
Crafts designed and made by the elderly. As the name suggests, they are cooler and more together than one would think. Variety is sorta hodgepodge but quality looks good.

Kate's Paper Emporium
The grand luxe emporium for buying paper and paper products. Crane's has nothing on these folks, with hundreds of kinds of paper and paper equivalents from bamboo and hand-printed Italian to diffraction gratings and decorative foils. If you've got the money and their elegant style is what you're looking for then this is probably the end of your search.

Pearl River Department Store
One stop shopping for Chinese oriented housewares, fabric, munchies, etc. I've been shopping here since the mid-eighties and they just keep getting better.

Surplus
American Science and Surplus
Gears and motors, medical charts and paper lace doilys, SciPlus sells it. Mostly featuring mechanical, electrical, and scientific equipment (they used to have a close partnership with Edmund Scientific), these folks also get military surplus, decorative papers, and pretty much anything else that they can get cheap and think is cool. A handcarved wooden birdhouse for three dollars? Certainly. The parts to turn it into a jet-powered robot aircraft? Possibly.

Harbor Freight Tools
Surplus and off-brand with broad shoulders. The Home Depot of surplus, with routers, greenhouses, but also funkier items like $180 cast iron stoves. Good to superb prices, solid to terrible quality. Check the brands, read the fine print, and don't expect that $40 Pakistani drill to work or look just like a Delta.

Work for a New York area non-profit? Then run don't walk and get registered with these folks, who can provide you with free stuff with a variety you just will not believe. Furniture (wooden or metal ), fabric, office supplies, computers, books (did I mention that it's all free?) and so on.

Toys for Boys
Archie McPhee
Home of the Hawaiian Elvis action figure with kung fu grip, Archie McPhee is the novelty store of your dreams. They sell rubber chickens, sure, and they do have *great* rubber chickens, but who else has Nunzilla? (Set of two for $6.95.)

Eastern-style swords for sale at reasonable prices. If this is what you want, they've got it, from highly ornamented and fastidiously authentic wakizushi with actual buffalo hide to sword canes clearly meant for your neighborhood drug dealer wanting to stay armed but low-profile.
